Aachen, or Aix-la-Chapelle, city has a
population of 243,000, North
Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is an
industrial centre producing mainly textiles
and machinery. Its mineral baths have been
famous since roman times. In 936-1531 the
city was the coronation place of German
kings. In 1801 it was taken by France and in
1815 Prussia. After WORLD_WAR_I Aachen was
occupied by Allies, two thirds of it were
destroyed during WORLD_WAR_II.
